Scientific Name: Conoclinium coelestinum (L.) DC

Common Name: Blue Mistflower, Ageratum

Family: Asteraceae (Aster family)

Stems: Upright to reclining, hairy perennial with a rhizome

Leaves: Opposite, simple, petiolate, ovate to lanceolate, acute to obtuse, with margins toothed and base wedge-shaped

Inflorescence:Terminal, flat-topped cluster of heads; flowers tubular, perfect, regular, light blue to purple

Fruit: Achene

Flowers:

  • Flower parts are blue to purple and not easily seen with the naked eye

  • Blooms first appear in mid summer and continue to early fall

  • There are 35 to 70 flowers per head

Flowering Time: July – October (ed. or later)

Habitat: Edges of streams, woods, ditches

Wetland Indicator: Facultative

Origin: Native to U.S.

Other Information: Distribution throughout the state of Mississippi. This herbaceous plant is easily cultivated.
